Management for IT Leadership

Technologists are promoted to managers based on their success at technical projects, then expected to succeed at a entirely different set of skills for which they have had little training.

While training is considered essential for engineers, virtually no management training is offered to IT managers, making the transitions, at each level of advancement, difficult.

Engineers view technical training as an important part of career development and as support for potential.  Management training too often seen as unnecessary or even taken as a criticism.  How is it that training is seen as essential in one sphere and unnecessary in another?

You can't learn to drive a car by reading a book.

Classes and books may be a cost effective way of communicating technical information, but structured classes are ineffective for developing 'people' skills since all people have different experience and resistances to success that need training.

Management, leadership, organizational, financial, political and communications skills are no different than any other learned skills and are not innate.  People start out with varying degrees of natural talent and require additional training to reach their potential. Managing people requires learning new skills, no different than learning a new programming language.

If you are dissatisfied with your career maybe it is time to consider a career coach to help develop a winning plan.
